Η εκστρατεία ξεκίνησε από τη διεθνή, μη-κυβερνητική οργάνωση Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) και υποστηρίζεται από περισσότερες από 130 οργανώσεις και δίκτυα.

Ultra Amazing.

Christine Radford is a huge supporter and volunteer at Argos Sanctuary.
She has been visiting for holidays over the last few years and always spent some of her holiday at the sanctuary. From UK she came armed with donations from friends and knitted jumpers for the dogs kindly and lovingly knitted by her dear friends.  Christine has recently moved to Cyprus permanently and this time bought with her in her container with her personal items an ultra sound. This is the story of the journey and people involved with donating the Ultra Sound for Argos Sanctuary Clinic
Priscilla Windsor Brown and Christine Radford met in 2011 on holiday in Turkey and remained friends. Priscilla now works for Pet Doctors Vet clinic in West Sussex and discovered an unused ultra sound.

Knowing Christine helped at a Argos Sanctuary and was in the process of moving to Cyprus she thought it may be of use in Argos Clinic. Once it was checked that it was working efficiently, Dani Hick (decision maker at the vet practice) agreed Argos could have it as their donation to help the animals. There was a small logistic problem of how to get the ultra sound from West Sussex to North Yorkshire where Christine’s container would be leaving for Cyprus .  Another friend of Christine's, Anna Kaye, worked for a haulage company and she arranged for Nelsons transport to collect from West Sussex and deliver to Christine in North Yorkshire for a small fee.
The day of Christine's big move to Cyprus came and the removal company Chudley International Transport arrived to pack the belongings into the container for shipment to Cyprus.
Removal men Brian and Arne careful loaded the really heavy pallet onto the container for its onward journey.
The Final leg of the journey was to get the ultra sound from Christine's home in Cyprus to Argos Sanctuary in Ormedhia.  Up stepped Peter Morton Transport and their removal  Dan, Max and Mike kindly delivered the ultra sound free of charge to Argos.
What a journey this valuable piece of equipment had.  Our grateful thanks are extended to Christine who set it all in motion and to all the people involved with donating the equipment, their time and expertise in getting it safely to our clinic at Argos Sanctuary.

Thank you to Rolf Keller for the wonderful support he gives to Argos Sanctuary.

Thank you to Rolf Keller for the wonderful support he gives to Argos Sanctuary.
Rolf Keller has been a supporter of the Argos animal shelter, sponsoring necessary projects to help in the functionality of the shelter.
Rolf has co-sponsored the installation of our solar system upgrading to new long-life batteries which were installed at the beginning of this year, purchasing €500 worth of cat food and also €600 towards our water supply.   During this recent visit in August,  he has also donated money for more cat food and also for the purchase of 3 more solar panels and a charge controller to complete the upgrade of our solar system to carry the load for the extra air condition units, fans and fridges added.

Without the kind and generous support of our sponsors, it would be impossible for us or any other shelter,  to implement such high cost projects.

Thank you once again Propet for your ongoing support.

A few days ago we had a huge donation from Propet Wholesalers Ltd consisting of wet and dry dog and cat food and many yummy treats for them as well. A whole pallet full that will last quite a while. What a wonderful surprise for which we thank them and very much appreciate their support.
Propet have been steady supporters of our special dietary needs cats in our 'Hills area' donating on a monthly basis the amount of I/D food for the needs of the cats. We very much appreciate their ongoing support for without this generous support, we would have an extra financial burden.

Vet Shaun Opperman praises our shelter.

From the 3rd to 5th October this year we were honored to be the chosen as host organisation for
The Dogs Trust Annual International Companion Animal Welfare Conference.

As host organisation our role was to promote the conference throughout Cyprus, set up venues for the seminar and demonstrations held in Ormidhia village and of course to welcome delegates from all over the world for a tour of our Argos dog and cat shelter.

Workshops provided by Dogs Trust  featured dog training demonstrations and were a huge benefit to local organisations .Our own dogs were used throughout the demonstrations.  Thirty participants at a two day workshop in Ormidhia enjoyed learning from the experienced speaker Steve Goward on subjects ranging from behavioral issues to puppy training. Eight of our dogs also took part in the main conference  held at The Hilton Hotel in Nicosia  demonstrating training techniques including  the Tellington touch (Ttouch ) technique - a gentle touch technique approach to training and calming animals

Three coaches of delegates from over forty countries visited our shelter and were shown around the entire site. We were able to share experiences with each other and learn of the problems faced in countries as far afield as Cape Verde and Nepal . Sadly, some of the participants did not want their identities disclosed in case they were recognized in their own towns where they are active in animal rescue proving that the world over working in animal rescue can be an uphill battle where often support is lacking. Amongst our visitors however we were delighted to meet Shaun Opperman head vet of the world famous Battersea Dogs Home and a face many of you will recognise from the wonderful ITV show Paul O’Grady for the Love of Dogs. We feel extremely proud to receive these words from Shaun concerning his visit

"I really enjoyed my visit to the
Argos Animal Sanctuary.
It was clean, well-run and not overcrowded.
The staff clearly put sound principles at the heart of their decision making.
Thank you for having me”.

From frightened to fearless meet Super dog Lucy.

In the words of new owner Anja,  Lucy tells us her story.

Pan-Orthodox concern for animals.

For many years now our friend and colleague in animal welfare, Dr. Christine Nellis, has been studying for her PhD in Eastern Orthodox Theology which relates to animal suffering and human soteriology and has been instrumental in the setup of the first site to promote love and humane care and understanding animals and their special role in society, as mentioned in the Bible.

Dr. Christine Nellist's influence within the Orthodox Church circle and her close cooperation with CVA, marked the onset of CVA's talks with the Cyprus Church which marked the first seminar on animal welfare with Bishop Isaiah of Tamasou and Oreinis in Nicosia.
The site is still under construction but you can read of some posts and those who are involved.

CVA Announcement on Dog Pounds.

Cyprus Voice for Animals has been lobbying for many years for the creation of 5 regional shelters for keeping stray animals. Despite everybody agreeing with the idea, nobody wanted to spend any money for the creation of these shelters. Nicosia Municipalities (with the exception of Latsia) are the only municipalities that proceeded with the creation of a Unified Dog Pound, already functioning, and now further improvement (installation of additional canopies etc.) are in process despite the adverse economic conditions. We note that Dhali Municipality has also moved forward with the creation of a dog pound, which is maintained by volunteers in collaboration with Cyprus Voice for Animals. Both areas are functioning under a temporary license issued by the veterinary services (until the approval of the new regulations for breeding establishments, animal shelters, dog pounds, animal hotels) which will hopefully ease the problem.

Unfortunately, Larnaca municipalities did not move further than their initial announcements, using bureaucracy as a pretext. How is it possible that the government does not provide the land when the creation of appropriate areas for keeping stray animals is within the LEGAL LIABILITIES of the Local Authorities? They simply were not interested in pushing this forward until now when they have to face their legal responsibilities. Same with Limassol municipalities. For years now they are saying they will build a unified animal shelter, they have the land at Armenochori, they have the plans but no sign of the shelter!!

Furthermore, we are concerned by the fact that the pound in Aradippou had all required permits by the Veterinary Services, as claimed by the mayors of Larnaca and Livadia . This makes us wonder what the legal responsibilities of Veterinary Services are! They grant operating permits to unfit establishments? They don’t perform any regular checks? They check only when there is a complaint?

Cyprus does not need more and more and more shelters or more areas for stray animals. What it needs are IMMEDIATE and RESPONSIBLE MEASURES leading to no more stray animals. And this will only happen when the local authorities take their responsibilities seriously. And there is only ONE solution. Microchipping and registering ALL DOGS, compulsory neutering and banning of euthanasia!

If none of these are taken into account, we will simply continue to witness the same atrocities over and over again, and we will be the smallest country in Europe, with the largest number of strays, the majority of which are sent to other European countries to escape euthanasia!

Πέραν τούτου μας δημιουργεί μεγάλο προβληματισμό ότι ο εν λόγο χώρος, όπως ισχυρίζεται ο δήμαρχος Λάρνακας, είχε όλες τις απαιτούμενες άδειες από τις Κτηνιατρικές Υπηρεσίες. Οπόταν εδώ, διερωτώμαστε, ποιές είναι οι νομικές ευθύνες των Κτηνιατρικών Υπηρεσιών, όταν σε τέτοιους χώρους δίνονται άδειες λειτουργίας! Λειτουργούν χωρίς έλεγχο;

Abandonment is a Death Sentence.

Many people in Cyprus believe that by abandoning their dog, they give them the opportunity to find another home and that, "surely somebody will pick him up." who will ever see those dogs abandoned in the hills, or the case of Billy abandoned in the tourist area of Protaras, kicked, beaten starving and nobody showed any compassion to help save this little poodle.
Some are lucky and picked up quite quickly but there are so many others who have spent weeks on the streets without food or water and when eventually they are picked up,the majority don't survive due to their advanced physical deterioration, which was the case with this gentle and loving dog Greco.

Greco was found by an English family vacationing in Cape Greco on the 16 November 2015 and brought to Argos the same day. He was emaciated and very weak and we fed him three times a day on dry and wet food but he wasn't making much progress. Blood tests did not reveal any problem and even the diet of fresh liver did not make any difference. He looked unwell and we transferred him to the clinic for observation and more tests. Unfortunately, he left his last breath after a few days at the clinic and the vet could only assume that it was organ failure due to the long periods in his life without food.

We don't always win the battle........ Stella.

Aradippou Hell Pound.

DETAILS OF THE CASE.

On the 2/08/14 I was called to investigate a disused pig farm in Aradippou farm area which was being used as the stray dog pound for four Larnaca municipalities who were, Larnaca Livadhia, Dromolaxia and Kiti. I’d had many complaints about the management and operation of the place but also the treatment of the dogs.
We arrived at 12:45 and found the place locked up and could only gain glimpses of the inside from the high windows. We decided to go round the side and see if there was an entrance to the building and crossing the field we stumbled upon an open shallow pit with the burned remains of 3 small dogs on top of many other bones below them.
The police were called and they called the owner to the site. He opened the door and we saw about 20 dogs living under horrible conditions, cage floors strewn with bones in amongst their excrement and green water in some of the buckets.
No proper records were being kept on incoming and outgoing dogs. We asked why the dogs in the pit were burned and the reply was that they had been euthanized by the vet and the bodies burned. The veterinary services had never euthanized any dogs in this place and he said he used a private vet but could not provide documentary evidence that those dogs were euthanized in the proper manner. We had reports that they were shot and indeed outside the farm the area was full of spent shells.
He complained that the municipality were not paying him on time so that he could buy the dog food and that’s why he gave them the bones to eat. So if he had no money to buy food, would he spend €20 or €30 per dog to euthanize them when he could have had it done free by the govt. veterinary services as per the provisions of the Law?
The key to this house of horrors was kept under the mat in front of the door and the municipality workers who found stray dogs would let themselves in to leave the dogs and of course, help themselves to any dog they took a fancy to.
Although we gave statements to the police, we were never called to give our evidence in court and we have never known how the police built up their case. It was pure luck that today I happened to be speaking to a friend and member of our organization who is herself a lawyer and in the courtroom today, heard the case and informed me of the outcome and penalty.
I leave the comments to you.

ARADIPPOU HELL POUND PENALTY.

The accused was given 2 years suspended sentence and the judge’s summation stated that there were mitigating circumstances of:
a) He had admitted guilt right from the beginning...
b) He was ill and in hospital at that time
The judge also warned the accused that if he committed any similar offenses during this 2 year period, he would have to serve the sentence.

IN GREEK BELOW.
